DESCRIPTION:
Inspired by Ombre Leather 16 by Tom Ford, Suede Noir opens with the raw presence of black leather, smooth, expansive, unmistakable. Cardamom and subtle spice rise through the surface, adding warmth and depth before settling into earthy patchouli and ambered woods. The leather remains central throughout, softening into a suede-like finish that feels refined and controlled, lingering with quiet intensity.

Imagine a tailored jacket thrown over broad shoulders, city lights reflecting off polished boots, the steady confidence of someone who moves with purpose.

Top: Cardamom

Middle: Leather, Jasmine Sambac

Base: Amber, Moss, Patchouli

Maceration is the quiet part of perfumery most brands skip. It’s the period after blending, where fragrance oils and alcohol are left to rest, bond, and mature - allowing the scent to fully develop its depth, balance, and longevity.

At Larcin, every batch is macerated for 3–4 weeks before it’s ever allowed to sell. No rushing. No shortcuts. This time is essential: harsh edges soften, notes settle into each other, and the fragrance becomes what it’s meant to be on skin.

Suede Noir: Inspired by Ombre Leather by Tom Ford

Suede Noir is Larcin's interpretation of Ombre Leather, the Tom Ford fragrance that made black leather wearable and became one of the best-selling designer scents of its era. It follows the same stark, sensual structure: a cardamom opening, a heart of leather and jasmine sambac, and a base of amber, moss and patchouli. This guide covers the desert story behind it, what it smells like, how it performs and how Suede Noir compares.

The Story of Ombre Leather: The American West in a Bottle

Tom Ford was born in Texas and raised among the sun-baked landscapes of the American Southwest: leather saddles, cowboy boots, dust on the wind and hot desert rock. Ombre Leather is that childhood distilled. The composition began as Ombre Leather 16, created by Givaudan senior perfumer Sonia Constant for Ford's 2016 runway collection, and proved so beloved that Ford relaunched it in 2018 as a permanent signature-line pillar. It became his most commercially successful mainline fragrance since Black Orchid, and its matte black bottle with the leather-look plaque is now one of the most recognisable objects in modern perfumery. A softer Eau d'Ombre Leather followed in 2024, confirming the DNA as a franchise of its own.

What Does Ombre Leather Smell Like?

Ombre Leather smells like real black leather, and that is the whole point. A brief flash of warm cardamom opens the fragrance before the leather accord takes over: smooth, slightly smoky and often compared to a luxury car interior or an expensive jacket rather than anything animalic or harsh. Jasmine sambac blooms quietly underneath, softening the hide with a wild floral sweetness like desert flowers at dusk. The base of amber, moss and patchouli evokes hot rock and dry earth, keeping the drydown rugged and grounded. The overall effect is dark, confident and quietly seductive, the rare leather fragrance that works on a first date as well as it does with a suit.

The Longevity and Projection of Ombre Leather

Ombre Leather is a dependable powerhouse. Two to three sprays deliver a full day of wear, with strong projection through the first three hours before it settles into a rich leather-jacket aura that lasts well into the night and lingers on clothing long after. It is famously a compliment magnet in cool air.

The Luxury Positioning of Ombre Leather

Ombre Leather retails around $268 for a 50ml bottle in Australia. As with everything carrying the Tom Ford name, the price folds in the designer's aesthetic authority, the iconic bottle and the brand's carefully cultivated aura of expensive sensuality. The juice is excellent; the logo is not free.

Suede Noir: A Faithful Ombre Leather Alternative

Suede Noir keeps the composition honest. Cardamom sparks the opening, leather and jasmine sambac form the smooth, floral-edged heart, and amber, moss and patchouli ground the drydown in warm desert earth. The character carries through faithfully: polished black leather with a soft floral lining, dark without ever being difficult. If Ombre Leather is the scent that made you understand leather fragrances, Suede Noir is that same jacket at a price that lets you wear it hard.

When to Wear Suede Noir

Suede Noir excels in autumn and winter: nights out, dates, dinners and any occasion where dark and confident beats fresh and safe. It leans masculine but is worn happily by anyone who loves leather scents, and it pairs particularly well with actual leather and knitwear. In serious heat the leather can turn heavy, so keep it for the cooler half of the year. A sample size is available on this page if you would like to break it in on skin first.

Most dupes use synthetic ingredients. Cheaper. Easier. But they fade fast and smell a little off.

We do three things they don’t:

Source natural ingredients from France, Grasse (same as designer brands)

Formulate at 30% concentration (most dupes are 8–12%)

Let each fragrance macerate for weeks so the scent properly settles

That’s the difference.

We’re not cutting corners.

Fair question. Two reasons.

First, we’re not a legacy luxury brand. No celebrity contracts. No flagship stores. No inflated marketing budgets. We sell direct to you.

Second, we’re not buying finished perfume and slapping a label on it. We handle the sourcing, formulation, and maceration ourselves.

Same quality decisions.

No 800% luxury markup.

Orders are processed within 1–3 business days. Delivery within Australia typically takes 2–5 business days, depending on your location. Remote areas may take slightly longer.

We offer a 30-day return window on all orders. If you’re not satisfied with your purchase, you can return it for a refund or exchange. Read More
