DESCRIPTION:
Inspired by Parfums de Marly’s Layton, Old Money speaks fluent elegance. Apple and lavender introduce the scent with ease, touched by spice and violet leaf. Beneath, vanilla, amber, and patchouli settle into a smooth, luxurious trail that clings like tailored cashmere. It’s charm without effort, opulence without announcement. Designed for those who don’t chase legacy - they inherit it.

Top: Apple, bergamot, lavender, mandarin orange

Middle: Geranium, violet, jasmine

Base: Vanilla, cardamom, sandalwood, pepper, guaiac wood, patchouli

Maceration is the quiet part of perfumery most brands skip. It’s the period after blending, where fragrance oils and alcohol are left to rest, bond, and mature - allowing the scent to fully develop its depth, balance, and longevity.

At Larcin, every batch is macerated for 3–4 weeks before it’s ever allowed to sell. No rushing. No shortcuts. This time is essential: harsh edges soften, notes settle into each other, and the fragrance becomes what it’s meant to be on skin.

Old Money: Inspired by Layton by Parfums de Marly

Old Money is Larcin's interpretation of Layton, the fragrance widely regarded as Parfums de Marly's crown jewel and one of the most complimented men's scents in modern perfumery. It follows the same amber fougere structure: crisp apple and bergamot sharpened by lavender, a floral heart of geranium, violet and jasmine, and a rich drydown of vanilla, cardamom, sandalwood, pepper, guaiac wood and patchouli. This guide covers the house, the fragrance's story, its scent and performance, and how Old Money compares.

Parfums de Marly: The Perfumed Court Reborn

Parfums de Marly was founded in Paris in 2009 by Julien Sprecher, who built the house around the opulence of 18th century France. Its namesake is the Chateau de Marly, the royal retreat commissioned by Louis XIV and beloved by Louis XV, whose court was so devoted to fragrance it became known as the perfumed court. Even the brand's horse emblem carries history, referencing the famous Marly Horses sculptures commissioned in 1743. In barely fifteen years the house has grown from newcomer to one of the most commercially successful names in niche perfumery, powered largely by two juggernauts: Delina for women and Layton for men.

The Story of Layton

Layton was released in 2016, composed by Hamid Merati-Kashani, the perfumer also behind the house's Herod and Pegasus. His brief imagined aromatic scents cascading from the royal fountains while racehorses paraded in the equestrian spectacles of the era. Whatever the poetry, the market verdict was immediate: Layton became the house's flagship, a permanent fixture at the top of best men's fragrance lists and one of the most recommended entry points into niche perfumery. Its reputation as a compliment magnet is so established that it has inspired an entire generation of similar apple and vanilla compositions across the industry, including a darker, spicier sibling from the house itself, Layton Exclusif.

What Does Layton Smell Like?

The opening is bright and inviting: a juicy green apple lifted by bergamot and mandarin, with lavender adding a cool, barbershop cleanliness. As it develops, geranium, violet and jasmine give the heart an elegant floral polish that keeps everything refined. The drydown is where the legend lives. A smooth, creamy vanilla emerges wrapped in cardamom, pepper and warm woods, sweet enough to be magnetic yet spiced enough to stay sophisticated. That apple, lavender and vanilla trio is the combination people recognise instantly, and it walks a rare line: distinctive enough to stand out, agreeable enough that almost everyone who smells it approves.

The Longevity and Projection of Layton

Layton is a proven performer. Eight to ten hours on skin is typical, with many wearers reporting the vanilla and woods drydown radiating from clothing a full day later. Projection is strong through the opening hours without ever becoming offensive, which is why it earns so many compliments in offices, restaurants and close quarters. It is the sort of fragrance that announces you politely and then keeps whispering long after.

The Luxury Positioning of Layton

Layton retails around $429 for a 125ml bottle in Australia, sitting in the established niche luxury bracket. As with its peers, part of the price buys genuinely excellent perfumery, and part buys the royal storytelling, the ornate flacon and the prestige of the Parfums de Marly name. The house has built its identity on aristocratic imagery, and that imagery is priced in.

Old Money: A Faithful Layton Alternative

Old Money recreates the full arc. Apple, bergamot, lavender and mandarin orange open the fragrance, geranium, violet and jasmine shape the heart, and the base lands on vanilla, cardamom, sandalwood, pepper, guaiac wood and patchouli. The character stays faithful to the original: fresh and polished on arrival, warm and quietly indulgent within the hour, with that unmistakable spiced vanilla trail through the evening. The name is not an accident. This is the smell most people picture when they imagine quiet, inherited wealth: tailored rather than flashy, confident rather than loud. The difference from the original is simply what you are not paying for, namely the chateau mythology and the crest on the bottle.

When to Wear Old Money

This style of fragrance shines in cooler months and after dark: autumn and winter days, dinners, dates and formal occasions. The lavender freshness keeps it office-appropriate in moderation, making it a genuine all-rounder for anyone who wants one reliable signature scent. It leans masculine but sits comfortably on anyone who enjoys warm, spicy vanilla fragrances. Whether you go for the Parfums de Marly original or start with Old Money, the effect is the same: understated wealth you can smell. A sample size is available on this page if you would rather meet it on skin before committing to a full bottle.

Most dupes use synthetic ingredients. Cheaper. Easier. But they fade fast and smell a little off.

We do three things they don’t:

Source natural ingredients from France, Grasse (same as designer brands)

Formulate at 30% concentration (most dupes are 8–12%)

Let each fragrance macerate for weeks so the scent properly settles

That’s the difference.

We’re not cutting corners.

Fair question. Two reasons.

First, we’re not a legacy luxury brand. No celebrity contracts. No flagship stores. No inflated marketing budgets. We sell direct to you.

Second, we’re not buying finished perfume and slapping a label on it. We handle the sourcing, formulation, and maceration ourselves.

Same quality decisions.

No 800% luxury markup.

Orders are processed within 1–3 business days. Delivery within Australia typically takes 2–5 business days, depending on your location. Remote areas may take slightly longer.

We offer a 30-day return window on all orders. If you’re not satisfied with your purchase, you can return it for a refund or exchange. Read More
