Le Labo: Anti-Marketing That Conquered the World

Le Labo was founded in New York's Nolita neighbourhood in 2006 by Fabrice Penot and Eddie Roschi, two former L'Oreal fragrance executives who wanted the opposite of mainstream perfume marketing: hand-blended bottles, personalised labels, plain packaging and scents named only for their dominant material and ingredient count. The formula worked so well that Estee Lauder Companies acquired the brand in 2014, and its once-underground labels are now recognised in every major city on earth.

Santal 33 has one of the strangest origin stories in perfumery. Perfumer Frank Voelkl originally proposed the sandalwood composition for Le Labo's 2006 launch collection, but the founders cut it from the lineup and turned it into a candle instead, called Santal 26. The candle barely sold at first, until New York's Gramercy Park Hotel began burning it and guests started asking to buy it. It quietly became the brand's biggest earner, reportedly around 70 percent of turnover in the early years. The turning point came when Penot smelled someone in a bar wearing the scent and was stunned to learn it was the very formula he had rejected, worn by Voelkl himself.
