DESCRIPTION:
Inspired by Diptyque’s Orphéon, A flash of cold juniper cuts through the dark, clean, electric, almost metallic, before dissolving into powdered jasmine and polished cedar. The air is thick with smoke and suggestion: worn leather booths, ghosted traces of tobacco, the quiet clink of glass. What begins crisp and luminous slowly deepens, softening into warmth and shadow. Tonka hums beneath the surface, smooth and addictive, wrapped in amber glow.

Top: Juniper berries

Middle: Jasmine (and powdery accords)

Base: Tonka bean, cedar, vetiver, powdery notes

Maceration is the quiet part of perfumery most brands skip. It’s the period after blending, where fragrance oils and alcohol are left to rest, bond, and mature - allowing the scent to fully develop its depth, balance, and longevity.

At Larcin, every batch is macerated for 3–4 weeks before it’s ever allowed to sell. No rushing. No shortcuts. This time is essential: harsh edges soften, notes settle into each other, and the fragrance becomes what it’s meant to be on skin.

Vice City: Inspired by Orphéon by Diptyque

Vice City is Larcin's interpretation of Orphéon, the woody chypre from Diptyque that bottles the mood of a Parisian jazz bar after dark. It follows the same unusual structure: a cold snap of juniper up top, jasmine wrapped in powdery accords through the heart, and a warm base of tonka bean, cedar and vetiver. Few fragrances smell anything like it, which is exactly why Orphéon built such a devoted following. This guide covers the house behind it, the story that inspired it, how it smells and performs, and how Vice City compares.

The House of Diptyque: From Boutique to Icon

Diptyque was founded in Paris in 1961 by three friends, Desmond Knox-Leet, Christiane Gautrot and Yves Coueslant, who opened a small boutique at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain selling fabrics and curiosities before moving into scent. The house became famous first for its candles, which remain a status object in their own right, and later for fine fragrances defined by artistry and restraint rather than celebrity marketing. Today Diptyque sits among the most respected names in niche perfumery, and its oval label is recognised worldwide.

The Story of Orphéon: A Jazz Bar in a Bottle

Orphéon, released in 2021, pays tribute to a real place: the Orphéon jazz club that sat directly next door to Diptyque's first boutique, where the three founders spent their evenings in the 1960s among cigarette smoke, powdered makeup and live music. The late master perfumer Olivier Pescheux set out to reconstruct that room in scent, using juniper to suggest a freshly poured gin and tonic, powdery notes to evoke blusher, and woods for the burnished panelling. Launched during lockdowns when real bars were out of reach, it struck a nerve. Orphéon went on to become Diptyque's best-selling fine fragrance worldwide, so successful that the brand now stages travelling Orphéon jazz club pop-ups in cities including New York, Tokyo, London and Paris, and released a lighter Eau de Toilette version in 2026.

What Does Orphéon Smell Like?

Orphéon opens crisp and almost icy. Juniper berries give it a gin-like bite that reads clean and aromatic rather than sweet, like the first sip of a cocktail in a cold glass. As it settles, jasmine softens the edges while a distinctive powdery accord takes over, the part most people remember, sitting somewhere between vintage face powder and warm skin. The base of tonka bean and cedar brings a creamy, gently smoky warmth that hums along for hours. The whole composition is genuinely unisex and often described as smelling expensive without being loud. It is closer to an atmosphere than a conventional perfume: intimate, nostalgic and slightly mysterious, the scent equivalent of dim lighting and a double bass.

The Longevity and Projection of Orphéon

Orphéon is a fragrance that wears close rather than shouting. Expect a comfortable six to eight hours on skin, with the powdery tonka drydown lingering longest and often persisting on scarves and collars for days. Projection is moderate and deliberate: it creates a soft aura around the wearer that people notice when they come near, which suits its intimate, after-dark character perfectly. Those wanting a room-filling statement should look elsewhere; those wanting a scent people lean in for tend to fall hard for this one.

The Luxury Positioning of Orphéon

Orphéon retails around $329 for a 75ml bottle in Australia, standard territory for prestige niche perfumery. Part of that price reflects genuinely fine perfumery, and part reflects the Diptyque name, the artist-illustrated bottle and the cultural cachet the oval label carries. As with most niche houses, the story and the object are a meaningful share of what you pay for.

Vice City: A Faithful Orphéon Alternative

Vice City rebuilds that same journey. Juniper berries lead the opening with the identical cold, aromatic snap. Jasmine and powdery accords carry the heart, and the drydown rests on tonka bean, cedar and vetiver, with the vetiver lending a subtle earthy depth to the finish. The signature contrast survives intact: fresh and cool on arrival, then powdery, creamy and warm as it develops on skin. If you know Orphéon, the character is immediately recognisable. If you have never tried the original, expect a refined, softly powdery woody scent that draws people in close rather than announcing itself across a room. What you are not paying for is the Paris boutique and the collectible bottle, which is precisely the point.

When to Wear Vice City

This is an evening and cool-weather natural: dinners, bars, dates, gallery openings and any setting where a quieter, more intimate fragrance suits the mood. It also makes a superb signature for people who dislike sweet or citrus-heavy perfumes, and it sits equally well on anyone, leaning neither masculine nor feminine. Whether you invest in Diptyque's original or start with Vice City, the effect is the same: a scent that feels like a memory of the best night out you never quite had. A sample size is available on this page if you would like to meet it on skin first.

Most dupes use synthetic ingredients. Cheaper. Easier. But they fade fast and smell a little off.

We do three things they don’t:

Source natural ingredients from France, Grasse (same as designer brands)

Formulate at 30% concentration (most dupes are 8–12%)

Let each fragrance macerate for weeks so the scent properly settles

That’s the difference.

We’re not cutting corners.

Fair question. Two reasons.

First, we’re not a legacy luxury brand. No celebrity contracts. No flagship stores. No inflated marketing budgets. We sell direct to you.

Second, we’re not buying finished perfume and slapping a label on it. We handle the sourcing, formulation, and maceration ourselves.

Same quality decisions.

No 800% luxury markup.

Orders are processed within 1–3 business days. Delivery within Australia typically takes 2–5 business days, depending on your location. Remote areas may take slightly longer.

We offer a 30-day return window on all orders. If you’re not satisfied with your purchase, you can return it for a refund or exchange. Read More
